Canada AI Governance Readiness 2026
Canadian AI governance readiness based on the federal Directive on Automated Decision-Making (in force; mandatory for federal automated decision systems and a strong voluntary baseline for the private sector), Quebec Law 25 automated-decision disclosure duties, and Ontario Bill 194 (public sector).
The Artificial Intelligence and Data Act (AIDA, Bill C-27) died on the Order Paper in Jan 2025 and will not return as drafted; successor federal legislation is expected - this framework keeps organizations positioned for it. Status check (24 October 2026): there is no federal AI act in force or before Parliament as far as we found.
The Artificial Intelligence and Data Act died with Bill C-27 on 6 January 2025, and law firm summaries of the 4 June 2026 AI for All strategy say it does not revive a comprehensive AI act. Bill C-36 (privacy, first reading 15 June 2026) would add automated decision duties but is not law.
Ontario Bill 194: the AI provisions of the Enhancing Digital Security and Trust Act, 2024 (Schedule 1 ss. 5 to 8) have been in force since 29 January 2025, but they bind only entities a regulation prescribes and no such regulation was found.
The federal Directive was amended on 24 June 2025. For the detail see CA_TBS_ADM, ON_AI_PUBSEC and CA_PROV_AI.
How Lavawall® helps you get to Canada AI Governance Readiness compliance
Most of Canada AI Governance Readiness comes down to technical controls you have to run and prove: keeping systems patched, hardening configuration, detecting breaches early, backing up what matters, controlling access, and keeping evidence that all of it actually happened. Lavawall® runs those controls across Windows, macOS, Linux, and Microsoft 365 / Google Workspace from one console, maps them to Canada AI Governance Readiness, and tracks your posture continuously instead of once a year at audit time.
- Assess your current state against Canada AI Governance Readiness in the Lavawall GRC module, with the questionnaire and control set built in.
- Remediate the gaps with the same platform — automated patching, configuration fixes, backups, and access review — not a separate project.
- Evidence everything with timestamped, exportable records auditors, insurers, and clients accept.
